BEALE Air Force Base is where the U-2 spy plane has been based at since the 1950s. There are 33 of hese planes at the base now. This base is just miles East of the floodplane beneath Oroville Dam that is currently under evacuaiton orders. Since its inception, one was shot down over Russia in 1960, one crashed in Oroville, killing a woman and pilot, another crashed in 2016, killing one pilot and Tom Hanks filmed there in 2014 about the 1960 incident for the film Bridge of Spies! The pilot who was captured in Russia, died in 1977 when his helicopter crashed into a DAM.
