A teenage girl who took a case to the high court be frozen after her death and won, has now been cryogenically frozen, to be brought back to life in hundreds of years.
The 14 year old who can not be named wrote a letter to the judge which said: “I don’t want to die but I know I am going to…I want to live longer…I want to have this chance.”
“I’m dying, but I’m going to come back again in 200 years.”
The girl had taken the case to High court Judge, Mr Justice Peter Jackson, in hope he would rule in her favour after the girls parents had been split on the decision.
Her mother had supported the decision but the teenagers father had opposed it meaning the courts had to intervene.
Mr Justice Peter Jackson, ruled that her mother should be the only person allowed to make decisions about the disposal of her body and granted the dying wish of the girl in a bold move and implied “proper regulation” of cryonic preservation – which is currently legal but unregulated should now be considered by lawmakers.
Cryogenic preservation of bodies does not fall under the remit of the Human Tissue Authority, which regulates the freezing of sperm and embryos because it was “not contemplated” when the Human Tissue Act 2004 was passed after the alder hey organs scandal inquest.
The girls body was frozen by Cryonics UK and has now been taken to the United States to a storage facility.
A Cryonics UK Spokesaman said:
A spokesman for the firm said: “We expect that future regulation will help hospitals to know where they stand legally and procedurally.
“The opportunity to utilise professional medical assistance may increase as we become a recognised and regulated field.”
